Goodnight, Daddy
Published in Hardcover by Morning Glory Press (November, 2000)
Authors: Angela Seward and Donna Ferreiro
Average review score:

single parent
After reading the review from Barbara Buckley, from the Rockville Centre Library in New York, it sparked something inside me to right a review of my own. There aren't a lot of books I can share with my child on the subject of single parenting, so I'm happy this one came along. My situation is different in that I'm a single father dealing with my child's absentee mother. The book deals with a tough subject which I can assure you is even tougher in real life. It's wonderfully written and illustrated and does what I expect for this book to do...reinforce to my son that he is not alone and it will be OK because he'll always have me...something I can never say enough throughout the day...and thanks to "GOODNIGHT DADDY", before bedtime as well.

Apparently Ms. Buckley won't be carrying this book in her library. How unfortunate for the parents of Rockville.

ATTENTION ALL PARENTS, NOT JUST SINGLE PARENTS!
This is the best book I have ever read to remind all parents that no matter how angry we get at our partners and most likely for good reason we must remember that children don't see things that way. Children love both parents perfectly and forever, no matter what.

It's important for us to remember our own childhoods when our parents were arguing or having problems. We never knew who was right or wrong. Even if we did, it didn't change the way we felt about either of them. We only saw two people we loved with all our hearts. This book helps kids deal with disappointing parents and helps the parent who is left behind to pick up the pieces. It is a great tool when these things happen. It also helps single parents when the other parent doesn't show up when they are supposed to.

Single parents and households with two parents alike should buy this book. It enlightens us to the world as our children see it.

I loved it and will read it to my children over and over. I live in a household with two parents and it still applies here. I really admire the mother in this book.

SHE IS MY NEW HERO.

Goodnight Daddy
I thought this was a terrific book! I've been there and it was wonderful to see that Phoebe had a good feeling about herself and that she was still able to go on whether her dad came to visit or not.

an authoratative text
the second edition of the manual is the work of three big maestros. the first chapter is an overview which is about man and machine. thereafter follow chapters on acquisition of images, transthoracic and trans esophageal. the two chapters on hemodynamic assessment and vulvular heart diseases are astonishingly lucid. other chapters are fundamentally excellent.the book concludes on an all important chapter on correlative echocardiography.in toto, this manual is small in size but large in authority.

Eleanor of Aquitaine, the mother queen
Published in Unknown Binding by David & Charles ()
Author: Desmond Seward
Average review score:

Quite an Easy Read
I have yet to read a book on Eleanor that I did not find interesting. She is quite a character. My recommendation is to start out by watching the film, Lion In Winter, and then graduating to books on the subject. This one would be a good place to begin.

Balanced view of a very interesting life
The author did an excellent job informing the reader of the differing viewpoints regarding this amazing woman. I learned in detail about Eleanor's two husbands, her ten children, and the various enemies to the "Angevin empire." Thus this book is not just about Eleanor, but also about the historical period in which she lived.

Excellent! For everyone!!
I love this book. I first read it two years ago, and I was hooked. Anyone remotely interested in Eleanor Aquitaine should definetly read this. It's fascinating and absorbing. Two thumbs up for Desmond Seward!

Easy Japanese: A Guide to Spoken and Written Japanese
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (August, 1991)
Author: Jack Seward
Average review score:

My first serious textbook and still my favorite
I will only say that after studying on my own for two years, and now completing my first year at school, it is this book I turn to for inspiration as well as condensed facts and grammatical sidelights. The key here is that Seward teaches Japanese out of pure ENJOYMENT, not a stale sense of 'I must learn it for the upcoming business meeting' which plagues all too many 'standard' beginning texts. In social situations, Seward's hilarious bunkei have provoked laughs and discussion amoung students and teachers alike - and some are surprisingly useful - "Get that stinky thing out of here quickly", for example (ever been near a Japanese kitchen when daikon is being boiled and you'll know what I mean!). This is a great textbook; a thorough introduction, a detailed review, and a funny ice breaker all in one. I own about thirty instructional texts on Japanese, and this is easily in the top five.

An invaluable book.
Jack Seward presents the Japanese language in one of the most interesting ways I have seen. Sometimes language books prove to be quite a chore to get through, even if one does have a passion for the language. However, Seward is a natural teacher, and does so in the best way: by conveying a natural desire what is being taught. This book also teaches the hiragana, katakana, and about 50 of the most useful kanji as well. Seward's examples are also very interesting - he avoids mundane example sentences such as 'Hiroshi has a cat', etc. Some of his sentences are easy to memorize due to their odd nature: 'I intend to go to your funeral and dance.' for example. However, Seward mentions that this book is only the first of many he will publish of this nature. This book was printed in 1991, about seven years ago from this review. Hopefully he has not changed his mind since then, as I eagerly await his next title.

Japanese in Action: An Unorthodox Approach to the Spoken Language and the People Who Speak It
Published in Paperback by Weatherhill (October, 1983)
Author: Jack Seward
Average review score:

entertaining
I first came accross this book while struggling with the Japanese language in Japan. It was great to read a such a fresh view of how both Americans and Japanese treat the language. The book is getting old, and Seward admits there are more fluent foreign speakers running around the island, but the humor and insights are still dead on in 2000.

Anyone who plans to visit or live in Japan would benefit from reading the anecdotes, but this book is especially for those who are really thinking about devoting time to the country and especially the language. I have read many books of this genre, and this is toward the top.

Be sure to check out Jay Rubin's helpful and hilarious "What the textbooks don't teach you" as well.

An invaluable book for the Japanophile!
This was the first book on the Japanese language that I enjoyed thoroughly. Mr. Seward discusses the difficulties that the student will encounter, and divides them into Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. This gives the aspiring linguist an informative and often hilarious view of what can be expected in the course of serious study of Japanese. Drinking, romance, fractured English, Seward's Sham...it's all here. I hear H.M. the Emperor gave Mr. Seward the Order of the Chysanthemum 3rd Class(a rare honor for a non-Japanese). After reading this book, I felt they should have made it 1st Class.

Radio Happy Isles: Media and Politics at Play in the Pacific
Published in Paperback by University of Hawaii Press (December, 1998)
Author: Robert Seward
Average review score:

Sounds of the Pacific--good stuff!
What a fine read. It even sounds like radio, which is an accomplishment in itself. And as regards the South Pacific, it's not a bad sound at all. Seward has a great ear, and the book is actually interesting. You learn something about this 'exotic' place at the same time you enjoy learning it!

A query, please (not a review)
According to the publisher, this books is now out. Do you have it on order? When will you have it?

The Wars of the Roses: Through the Lives of Five Men and Women of the Fifteenth Century
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (October, 1995)
Author: Desmond Seward
Average review score:

Seward hits yet another home run!
This book is fast-paced, realistic, and superbly written. I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about the Wars of the Roses, or who wants the story to be told in a more personal matter. It's another two thumbs up!

Gripping history, well written.
The author writes a very interesting book of a very complex time. Although I am no medevilist, Seward's presentation allowed me to follow the events and charactors through the story.

This book would interest anyone who exists in an environment devoid of rules or strong central aughority figures where the actors have strong interests they must advance or defend. Anyone in a large corporation or the political world will recognize this Machevellian climate where getting things done requires alliances with those who may abandon you around the next bend in pursuit of their objectives. I serve in a legislative body and this book at times bore strong resemblance to the tussles and battles waged on the inside of the assembly.

Seward's book is very readable and fascinating for the historical era it evokes and the inteplay of interests displayed in the ruthless struggle to come out on top.

The Adventures and Sufferings of C. S. Elliott
Published in Paperback by Northwest Pub (August, 1994)
Author: Seward Whitfield
Average review score:

Dog-gone funny
Seward Whitfield tells a delightful story filled with some of the most unique and interesting characters I've read about in years. Imagine you're a dog who thinks he's human and who gets caught up in the affairs of a small town on the Oregon coast. The story is an entertaining look at human nature in spite of, or perhaps because of, the canine protagonist.
